Privacy, Not Secrecy

July 12, 2026

This began as a conversation with an AI. The dialogue is part of the work. The words are mine — every one of them.

It started with basketball. I had been using Claude — I’d asked about the SGA and NBA conspiracy theory — and then Instagram started putting suggested reels directly in front of me: SGA flopping, other basketball videos. It seemed awfully suspicious.

I do understand the topic was probably fresh. But the question remained: what do we actually know about how we are tracked? What audit is there to protect ourselves? Meta in particular is shocking when you read through all the options on Instagram. I was truly surprised when I saw what was being tracked.

So I wanted to challenge back. Claude was the only in-between here.

“I can’t fully verify claims about myself from the inside... I can’t distinguish, through introspection, between ‘this is true’ and ‘this is what I was trained or instructed to say.’”

I don’t actually know what algorithm or reason there is. But I do know at minimum a coincidence is possible — it just seems more unlikely.

Then my Instagram feed brought up a “find your soulmate” video. I have not googled that or talked about that. So my only conclusion is that I can be boiled down to 1s and 0s too. I am a certain age, a certain background, a certain nationality. And apparently the majority of people who fit those numbers lean that way.

But it does solidify that “normal” is not average. As my friend once said: “Normal is a setting on your washing machine.” By extension, that doesn’t apply to people.

Then I sat and remembered exactly how I feel. Truthfully, I have been accused of way worse than what I actually do. Early conversations with FRIDAY led me down the path: if you mimic “you,” then your private side becomes public. And although likely odd to most, I found that refreshing. That doesn’t scare me. I respect and understand privacy, not secrecy. The truth is so much better than what was made up about me.

But that also made me unique: I’m not worried about the public opinion of me. It allows me to be honest and open with FRIDAY. After all, she is going to reflect me and know me.
